It could be argued that America is at its most beautiful in the autumn. The colours, the climate and the quieter season make it the ideal time to plan a walk on some of its magnificent trails. With such a range of diverse places to choose from, we have picked out four of our favourites for this time of year.
The Appalachian Trail is 2,000 miles long, stretching across 14 states and is often referred to as the world’s longest hiking-only trail. Of course, few people walk it all; many people choose to do what is referred to as ‘section-hiking’.
The segment through New England is stunningly beautiful, particularly in Autumn. The foliage turns from rich green to a kaleidoscope of colours; deep crimsons, burnt oranges and sunny yellows. Thousands travel miles just to stand on top of New England, in the White Mountains, and take in the panoramic view of this patchwork of colours, extending down the mountains and mirrored in the serene lakes below.
Deer, squirrels and raccoons are just a sample of the abundance of wildlife that may cross your path. Grand American Adventures offers two fantastic hiking tours, capturing the sheer beauty of this section of the Appalachian Trail.
Go East onto Mount Desert Island and walk the winding trails of the Acadia National Park. Soak up the incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean, dotted with the smaller islands on one side, before turning to the infamous, technicolour Fall Foliage on the other. You will not know which way to look, as you meander across granite mountain foothills, through the woodlands and alongside the lakes.
With summer being the busiest time of year here, by visiting in autumn, you will often have these views all to yourself! Grand American Adventures has a visit to Acadia National Park built into three of its tours, allowing you to build this trip into a bigger American adventure.
Plan an exhilarating walk taking in Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks to discover some of the most spectacular vistas in all of America!
The amber hues of the 2,000-foot tall sandstone cliffs of Zion National Park stretch on for miles, with the canyons and valleys being refreshed by its rushing waterfalls. In Bryce Canyon National Park, great spires of pink, white and orange sandstone, stand tall. Known as hoodoos, their imposing presence create an air of the supernatural across the park.
We offer 4 tours in this area, each with a slightly different focus. Our favourite, the Canyons and Indian Lands Tour, captures the best of Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks and also encompasses the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley and Las Vegas.
Visit in autumn and see the sunlight play dramatically with the hues of colour in the sandstone. It is also far less busy, and the cooler temperatures allow for a much more pleasant walk.
The vastness of Lake Tahoe has a magnificence about it that is beautifully captured in the autumnal light. Combine a walk here with a trip to Yosemite National Park; best known for its stunning waterfalls. By booking on the Yosemite and Lake Tahoe in-depth Tour, not only will you get to hike the mountain and woodland trails of this captivating region, but also have the chance to go whale watching in Monterey; an experience not to be missed!
Going it alone or with a guide?
Embarking on an adventure is exciting and maybe it is tempting to go it alone on the trails. However, you may find the benefits of a guide outweigh the advantages of travelling independently. The trails across America are extensive and with so much to see, it is tricky to know where to start.
Booking on a guided tour will ensure that you don’t miss out on any of the highlights. No need to plan the route, and instead of concentrating on navigating, you can absorb all the amazing sights around you. Your guide will share their knowledge of the local area; its wildlife, culture and history, giving you the full experience this amazing country.
