Let’s see a show of hands of those who decided that ‘get fit’ should be a New Year’s resolution for 2020? Although it can be a particularly tricky resolution to keep, you’re far more likely to succeed with the right motivation. That’s why we’ve rounded up some of our most active adventures that are worth getting fit for.
Canyons and Indians Lands
On our Canyons and Indian Lands trip, there are incredibly beautiful hikes through the impressive Grand Canyon, the iconic Monument Valley and the kaleidoscopic Bryce Canyon National Park. But one of our favourite hikes on this adventure is the famously challenging Angels Landing trail in Zion National Park. The views are dramatic and panoramic, with 270 million-year-old rock layers to admire. There are easy sections over level terrain so all abilities can enjoy the sweeping landscapes and views of the soaring sandstone walls. But the fittest hikers (and those with a head for heights!) get the best experience by climbing the notorious Hogsback using the chains that are bolted into the stone.
Grand Canyon Rafting
The thrill of white water rafting is matchless. And what better place to experience the adrenaline rush than taking to the Colorado River to explore the caverns, turquoise pools and waterfalls of the Grand Canyon? It takes eight days on a Grand Canyon Rafting trip to raft its entirety, where you’ll swim and hike too. It’s suitable for all levels of fitness (water confidence is the most important thing on this trip) but getting into shape will help you negotiate the 200-odd rapids on this exhilarating adventure where you’ll tackle rapids of up to class V. High octane adventure is balanced with relaxing evenings around a campfire watching blazing canyon sunsets, before kicking back under a starlit sky.
Hawaii Islands Adventure
To get your blood pumping, spend an action-packed ten days biking, hiking, snorkelling and surfing in paradisiacal Hawaii on a three-island discovery. On our Hawaii Islands Adventure, you’ll take a 23-mile cycle ride down the Haleakala volcano, snorkel in the colourful marine world of Kealakekua Bay Park and hike to the bottom of Halema’uma’u Crater in Volcanoes National Park. At Pearl Harbor on Oahu island, watch Hawaii’s surfers take to the waves on the North Shore as the sun sets, or suit-up and join them.
Alaska, Wildlife and Wilderness
There's nothing quite like delving further into the brutal yet magical Alaskan terrain, whether that's hiking to hidden waterfalls or kayaking to tidal saltwater lakes that are otherwise unreachable. On our Alaska Wildlife and Wilderness adventure, seize the opportunity to spot Denali’s Big Five, take a float plane into the wilderness to search for grizzly bears and enjoy an exhilarating glacier hike in Wrangell-St Elias National Park for an experience you won’t forget.
Yellowstone Wildlife Trails
Venture around the volcanic scenery of the inimitable Yellowstone National Park, discovering its geysers, mud pools and hot springs. There are walking trails for all abilities on our Yellowstone Wildlife Trails adventure, where if you're lucky, you can spot the region’s Grizzlies, wolverine, coyote and lynx on hikes around Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. Active adventurers will enjoy the opportunity to swim in Coeur d’Alene, a large and temperate lake. Float on your back to search for bald eagles circling overhead.
Canadian Rockies Wilderness Walk
For the ultimate hiking adventure, a heli-hike in the Rockies is hard to surpass. On our 13-day Canadian Rockies Wilderness Walk, a helicopter deposits you in the backcountry where no designated trails exist. For three days, you’ll hike and camp in the true Canadian wilderness. Either side of this epic heli-hiking experience you’ll explore some of Canada’s most famous trails and sights, including glorious Lake Louise, Yoho National Park, the Maligne Canyon in Jasper National Park and the Cory Pass Trail in Banff National Park.
